What are the benefits of ceiling fans?
Whether your home is an older traditional style home or a modern minimalist style, there is a ceiling fan option available (this also applies to commercial and industrial properties). Ceiling fans provide the following benefits / features:
-
Ceiling fans are far more cost-effective to run than ducted air conditioning or split-system air conditioners
-
On a still Summer’s day, ceiling fans move the air around keeping it fresher
-
In Summer, ceiling fans can be run at the same time as a cooling system helping to move the cool air around
-
In Winter, the direction of the fans can be reversed so that when running a heating system at the same time, this will help move the warm air around
-
With the fabulous range of contemporary ceiling fans available, they can make a real design statement
-
A large outdoor ceiling fan can add a relaxed atmosphere when entertaining

Ceiling fans can be used at the same time as another cooling system (e.g. split-system), helping the cool air to move around even more.

CEILING FANS (AC vs DC)
AC ceiling fans
(AC = Alternating current)
-
AC ceiling fan motors are powered by an alternating current coming directly from your power provider
-
Generally 3 speeds to choose from
-
Generally cheaper to purchase than a DC ceiling fan
-
Can be controlled in a number of ways – wall control, pull cord, remote control and smart control (depending on the model)
-
Energy efficient compared to a ducted or split-system air conditioning system
DC ceiling fans
(DC = Direct current)
-
DC ceiling fan motors are powered by a direct current – this occurs through an AC to DC converter integrated into the ceiling fan (it converts the standard AC power to DC power, thus controlling the ceiling fan at a lower voltage)
-
Generally 5 – 7 speeds to choose from
-
Feature sea breeze technology that fluctuates with various speed settings (mimicking a breeze effect)
-
DC ceiling fans consume 70% less power than AC ceiling fans e.g. for the same cooling result, an AC fan may require 100 watts, whereas a DC fan may only require 30 watts
-
DC ceiling fans produce less heat – the motor of an AC ceiling fan gets extremely hot when it is run on full speed (not what you want when you are trying to cool down a room)
-
DC powered ceiling fans are slim and compact
-
A lighter and slimmer motor allows for a lower profile (ideal for low ceiling heights)
-
More choices for outdoor ceiling fans
-
Extremely quiet

Can anyone install ceiling fans?
In Australia, it is illegal for an unlicensed person to install a ceiling fan that operates with a wall switch. Risks of installing it yourself include electrocution, the fan falling if not installed correctly, incorrect wiring being installed creating a fire risk, along with potentially affecting your property insurance cover.
PEK Electrical and Data Services are qualified electricians. We will check that your property's switchboard meets industry standards and will install your ceiling fan correctly – thus keeping the manufacturer's warranty in tact.
